ATWATER The Last Hope Cat Kingdom's co-owner met with Merced County Animal Control officials Wednesday the first time since her facility was raided and 200 pets were euthanized. The investigative interview lasted a little more than an hour and provided co-founder Renate Schmitz the opportunity to speak with officials about last week's seizure.

On Friday, he will be given a prestigious award in Washington, D.C., from the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution for his dedication to veterans. The 75-year-old Conner doesn't term his volunteer efforts sending packages to active-duty servicemen, writing letters, fund raising and helping with veterans' burial details a hobby. ATWATER The Atwater City Council on Monday unanimously passed a balanced $39.1 million budget for fiscal year 2013-14 a dramatic reversal from the doom-and-gloom scenarios the city faced less than a year ago. Council members voted 5-0 to pass the budget, which anticipates revenues and transfers-in of $11.97 million to fund expenditures of $11.92 million.

A family was displaced Sunday morning after a large fire erupted at their home outside of Atwater. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames rising from the back bedroom area of the single family residence. They were able to contain the fire within 30 minutes.
ATWATER Sandra Schiber is the new superintendent of the Atwater Elementary School District. Schiber, 51, replaces Melinda Hennes, who is retiring at the end of the month after eight years as superintendent. Schiber has been the Merced Union High School District's assistant superintendent for human relations for 3ÃÂ½ years and a district employee for 28 years.
