2 dead, 3 injured in Winton shooting late Wednesday

WINTON -- Two people were killed, including a man in a wheelchair, and at least three others were injured late Wednesday when a group opened fire on people in front of a Winton house.

Witnesses said at least two people wearing white T-shirts shot at the people in front of the house, killing a man in his early 20s. Witnesses said one of the people who died was in a wheelchair, the victim of a previous shooting.

The victims were in the driveway of the house when another group approached and opened fire. Spent shell casings littered the street in front of the home.

One victim died at the scene in the driveway. Another victim died at the hospital. One of the injured is a woman who was shot while going to pick up her child, according to the sheriff's department.

Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin called the shooting "a nauseating display of savagery."

Wednesday night's shooting, at about 9:30, happened at a house near Peridot Avenue and Caleb Drive in the northeast part of town.

No arrests have been made and nobody has been named as a suspect.

Six homicides have been reported in Merced County this year.
