I suspect people don't totally appreciate being taken out for a treat when it appears to be a chore for those doing the treating. It can happen at any age, but what I saw the other day concerned a middle-aged couple, probably married, and an older woman, probably the mother of one of them.

The three of them were at brunch, two tables away from ours. Of course I noticed them, since I am a confirmed people-watcher -- a term I much prefer over "nosey."

That's a mutt.

Ever hear those words? I do. All the time. And the dogs that are called mutts are my registered border collies.

The mission of the Merced County Historical Society and Courthouse Museum is to collect, preserve, research and interpret historical records and artifacts. To encourage and promote the love and understanding of Merced County's natural, archaeological and cultural history, the society began publishing books in 2002 and has successfully released eight books as of today.

Many of these publications were the result of the research and development of temporary exhibits at the Courthouse Museum. For example, the most recent release is "Le Grand History: Memories of Le Grand History Club." The exhibit came down in April after a good five-month run. The following is an excerpt of the book about Le Grand Community Day, a long tradition started in 1897. The story was contributed by Donna Gillette Hall.
