Taste of Merced County and Beyond: Picnic and fireworks
LA GRANGE -- La Grange is hosting a potluck picnic and fireworks at the La Grange Firehouse on Friday.
Hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings will be provided; please bring a side dish and join the fun. Fireworks will be supervised by the volunteer fire department so if you have fireworks bring them and let us set them off for you.

Enjoy some chicken
The American Legion Post No. 83 presents chicken to go from 5 to 7 p.m. on July 11 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 939 W. Main St. in Merced.

Pancakes for breakfast
The Old School House in Coulterville will host its monthly breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. on July 13.
Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children or $15 for a family of two adults and two children.
Don't forget to enter the dessert raffle and sign up for a free breakfast drawing.
Come and enjoy pancakes, eggs, sausage or ham, fruit and coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Breakfast for a cause
The Merced Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4327, serves breakfast on the third Saturday of each month in the east wing of the Veterans Memorial Building, 939 W. Main St.
Scrambled eggs, pancakes and sausage with coffee and orange juice are served from 8 to 11 a.m.

Pancakes each month
The La Grange Rebekah Lodge No. 323 hosts a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month at the La Grange IOOF Hall, Yosemite Avenue (Main Street).
Biscuits and gravy, cheese omelet and fresh fruit plus drinks will be served. Biscuits are baked at 6 a.m., so come early.
No item costs more than $4, and the proceeds go to support the local elementary school.

MARIPOSA
Barbecue competition
John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation in Mariposa will host its second annual Blazin' Hog BBQ Competition and Zydeco Music Festival on Sept. 20 at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.
Barbecue contestants will compete for $500 cash prizes, and there will be arts and crafts vendors and children's activities planned. Cost is $10, $7.50 for senior groups, $5 for students (12-17) and under 12 is free.
