California State University, Stanislaus student Sou Xiong of Merced is participating in the Sacramento semester program which provides participants with first-hand experience working in a legislative office.

A senior political science major at CSU Stanislaus, Xiong came to the United States with his family from Thailand at the age of 5 and attended Merced schools. He plans to enroll in the master of public Administration program at CSU Stanislaus this fall. Three of his brothers and sisters are also attending college as the first members of their family to pursue higher education.

Salomon Raya Orozco and Magaly Salas Diaz of Merced are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Ilse Polet Raya Salas. She was born at 1:19 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center Merced, weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long. Ilse will join her siblings, Daniel and Joshua Raya Salas, at home. Maternal grandparents are Fabian Salas and Angelica M. Diaz of Merced. Paternal grandparents are Adolfo Raya and Josefina Orozco of Melrose, Minnesota.

Maximiliano Maria Madrigal of Winton are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Karyme Yolianna Madrigal. She was born at 10:12 a.m. on April 16, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center Merced, weighed 9 pounds 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Rogelio Lozano and Maria Martinez of Winton. Paternal grandparents are Maximiliano and Esperanza Madrigal of Winton.
