California State University, Stanislaus student Sou Xiong of Merced is participating in the Sacramento semester program which provides participants with first-hand experience working in a legislative office.

A senior political science major at CSU Stanislaus, Xiong came to the United States with his family from Thailand at the age of 5 and attended Merced schools. He plans to enroll in the master of public Administration program at CSU Stanislaus this fall. Three of his brothers and sisters are also attending college as the first members of their family to pursue higher education.

Salomon Raya Orozco and Magaly Salas Diaz of Merced are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Ilse Polet Raya Salas. She was born at 1:19 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center Merced, weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long. Ilse will join her siblings, Daniel and Joshua Raya Salas, at home. Maternal grandparents are Fabian Salas and Angelica M. Diaz of Merced. Paternal grandparents are Adolfo Raya and Josefina Orozco of Melrose, Minnesota.

Maximiliano Maria Madrigal of Winton are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Karyme Yolianna Madrigal. She was born at 10:12 a.m. on April 16, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center Merced, weighed 9 pounds 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Rogelio Lozano and Maria Martinez of Winton. Paternal grandparents are Maximiliano and Esperanza Madrigal of Winton.

    University of San Francisco senior Paul Bianchi spent the six-week winter intersession in Antarctica prepping classrooms and equipment for doctoral students and even driving renowned NASA engineer Mike Comberiate. Bianchi, a biology major, jumped at the chance to assist Deneb Karentz, professor of environmental science on her intersession teaching trip to the coldest, driest, windiest place on Earth, after a graduate student backed out at the last minute. Normally a position reserved for graduate-level scholars, Bianchi took on the responsibility of handling the logistics involved in setting up for lectures and labs, preparing for biological sample collecting in the field and maintaining snowmobiles and other equipment for a graduate integrated Antarctic biology course.

    Christina Hoogendam of Merced was named to the Dean's Honor List for Winter 2008 at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. She was honored for academic achievement which placed her in the top 15 percent of all students in the College of Liberal Arts.

    Clay Mix, a new ceramic store/gallery/studio "Clay Mix" at 1003 N. Abby St., Fresno, kicks off the opening of its business with a special exhibition featuring local ceramic instructors. The exhibition is titled "Clay Mentors" and includes artwork by Susanne French of Merced College, Una Mjurka of CSU Fresno, Bob Kizziar of Fresno City College and Garrett Masterson of Reedley College. The exhibit showcases the variety of approach to ceramic art from each artist; conceptual, functional, sculptural, figurative, small and large.
