WASHINGTON, DC Rep. Jeff Denham, chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management, and Rep. Mica, chairman of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, today declared a victory in their efforts to get the federal government to stop sitting on its assets and finally move forward with the redevelopment of the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C. Denham and Mica made it clear that this is not the end, and they highlighted many more examples across the country where this type of waste exists, according to a news release from Denham's office. We chose the Old Post Office because it is a symbol of a larger national problem. Similar properties sit vacant or underutilized all across the country. Redeveloping these properties will create thousands of jobs and promote economic growth. said Denham said in the release. When Denham first took over as Subcommittee Chairman one year ago, he immediately urged GSA to aggressively pursue redevelopment of this property to promote economic growth and job creation. At todays hearing, he questioned GSA Commissioner, Bob Peck, about how GSA will ensure this project and other asset management improvements move ahead expeditiously, so that taxpayers can stop pouring money into vacant and poorly utilized buildings. In this case Congress held multiple hearings and passed two laws requiring action, yet years and years passed before we could get to the point of announcing the Trump organization as the private sector developer, said Chairman Denham. The bottom line is the system is broken and we need a new process to sell or redevelop these properties. My bill, CPRA, will streamline this process to ensure economic and job growth across the country. The redevelopment of the Old Post Office is an example of the type of asset management improvement that could be imple...

WASHINGTON, DC Today, Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) joined with his colleagues in the Blue Dog Coalition in passing the Expedited Legislative Line-Item Veto and Rescissions Act (H.R. 3521) by a strong bipartisan vote of 254 to 173. This bill puts additional pressure on Congress and the President to work cooperatively to reduce wasteful government spending, according to a news release from Cardoza's office. Last March, Cardoza and the Blue Dogs endorsed similar legislation, arguing the measure is needed to help restore some fiscal discipline back to the federal government. To balance the budget and cut the deficit, we need to make tough choices, Cardoza said in the release. Cooperation between the President and Congress to eliminate wasteful spending is what taxpayers are demanding -- and what they deserve -- from their elected leaders. H.R. 3521 would create an expedited process that would allow the President to sign an appropriations bill into law and at the same time propose to Congress that specific non-entitlement spending be rescinded, or cut. The President would send his recommendations for rescissions to Congress within 45 calendar days, and legislation implementing the proposed cuts would receive an expedited up-or-down vote without amendment. If a majority in both the House and the Senate vote for the rescissions package, the spending cuts would become law. This bill devotes all savings from the Expedited Legislative Line-Item Veto and Rescissions Act to deficit reduction and requires the statutory discretionary spending caps to be adjusted downwards to reflect the savings, according to the news release. Expedited rescission is a key component of the Blue Dogs 2010 Blueprint for Fiscal Reform a comprehensive, 15-point plan to balance the budget and lay the groundwork for sound fiscal policies over the long term. ...
