Merced College to screen film about Japanese-American WWII units
Merced College said it would screen the film, "Only the Brave," at its theater Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m.
The film describes the exploits of the all Japanese-American fighting units, the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, during World War II.
The feature film was directed by Lane Nishikawa, who will be in attendance and will participate in a Q & A after the film. Nishikawa will sign autographs and will have DVD copies of the film available to the public.
The 100th Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team include the most decorated soldiers in U.S. history. Their heroism was highlighted when they rescued the 141st Regiment of Texas from annihilation. The 141st Regiment is known as the “Lost Battalion.” The all-Nisei soldiers rescued 300 men and a cost of 700 dead and wounded American soldiers.
The screening is sponsored by the Livingston/Merced Japanese-American Citizens’ League, the Cortez JACL, Merced College Social Science Division, Japanese Americans of Merced County, Southeast Asian-American Professional Association, Filipino American National Historical Society, Merced County NAACP, Merced Assembly Center Commemorative Committee and the Livingston VFW.
Admission is $5 for the general public. All veterans of U.S. military service, including those who fought alongside their American counterparts, will be admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door.
