Teen accused of taking cash from woman at Beachwood market

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Friday for allegedly snatching a cash-filled envelope from a woman outside a Beachwood-area market.

The incident was reported around 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Shop & Go Market in the 2000 block of Beachwood Drive, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, Merced County sheriff's spokesman.

The 48-year-old victim was standing outside the store when the robber, wearing a red shirt and black pants, grabbed the envelope and took off running. The envelope contained several hundred dollars in cash, MacKenzie said.

The woman had the cash because she'd offer rides to workers who were without driver's license or means of travel, charging them a fee. The victim and witnesses chased the robber, but were unable to catch him, MacKenzie said.

Part of the robbery, however, was recorded by surveillance cameras at the store.

While investigating the crime, Detective Lane Clark identified the suspect from the footage. The investigation led him and other detectives to a home in the 2000 block of Beachwood Drive. The suspect was taken into custody at the home around 3 p.m. Friday.

The boy was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of robbery. He's being held without bail.
