Clerk reports assault, robbery at cigarette shop

Merced police are seeking two robbers who attacked a clerk at a cigarette store on Tuesday.

Police responded to 202-A W. 18th St. after the clerk pressed a panic alarm at 5:11 p.m.

The clerk told police that two men entered the store wearing masks -- and one of them punched him twice in the face. The other robber also struck the clerk with an unknown type of handgun -- firing a round into the ceiling in the process, police said.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, police said. Officers searched the area, but were unable to find the pair.

The clerk said the robbers were wearing dark clothing.

The robber with the handgun was described as wearing a black bandana around his nose and chin, while the other man was wearing a black and white Halloween mask.

The suspects were said to be between 5-foot-6-inches and 5-foot-8-inches tall and of average weight and build.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crime to call Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702 or the department's anonymous tip-line at (209) 385-4725.
