Man arrested after stealing two cars
ATWATER -- A 35-year-old Atwater man stole a second car Thursday morning after the first one he snatched ran out of gas, according to the sheriff's department.
Surgio Baltazar was arrested by Merced County Sheriff's deputies at Steinberg Road and Sunset Avenue when they spotted a stolen dark blue Honda.
He's being held in the Merced County Jail in lieu of $175,000 on a suspicion of armed robbery, stealing a car, possessing stolen property and probation violation.
Baltazar allegedly walked up to the victim in the 9000 block of Atwater Jordan Road at 7 a.m. and demanded the keys. When the victim refused, Baltazar allegedly flashed the butt of a handgun, Deputy Jason Cope said.
Deputies found a .22 caliber handgun and a ski mask in the car Baltazar was driving.
