Editor: Betty Barber. What a wonderful woman to share with everyone in Merced ... she really has touched so many lives.
Nine years ago, when my husband and I were transferred from San Diego to Merced we had 4-month-old premature twins.
I had committed to breast-feeding the boys for at least a year, but that sounded a lot easier within the confines of the hospital's neonatal unit with my own team of nurses.
They suggested calling ahead to the local La Leche League support person. I called and reached Betty on the other end. She was a voice of calm in the midst of a new mother's madness.
She sent me books in the mail before we moved and invited me over when we got to Merced. I am so thankful for the kindness she extended our family, even long distance.
