Editor: Like the writer of the letter to the editor on Friday, "Stop Complaining," I too am a middle-class American who has never had a problem getting health insurance.
What shocks me even more is that there are people out there who have absolutely nobody in their lives that have been bankrupted by not having health insurance. If your reader really is fortunate enough to obtain private health insurance for his family of three for $164 a month, I think it's fantastic and he should share his money-saving tips to all.
Both my mother and mother-in-law are just a few years shy of being Medicare eligible and neither has had health insurance for several years. Since they both have had pre-existing conditions (breast cancer for one, high blood pressure and cholesterol for the other) the only policies that they can obtain cost more than $600 a month.
At what point does everybody buy-in to the desperate need for health care reform? How many families should have to make decisions on the medical care for their loved ones based solely on their ability to pay instead of the true medical necessity?
