Letter: Facts to consider

Editor: When we hear about a dog mauling, the first reaction is outrage and rightfully so.

Sadly, many choose to direct it at the dogs.

The American pit bull terrier is a powerful breed and their training and socialization are not to be taken lightly.

Before making a judgment I ask you to consider these facts: Each year, 38,000 children are killed by guns, 2,000 children are killed by their own parents or guardians, and three are killed by pit bulls.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that pit bulls account for less than 1 percent of dog bites.

Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller, Jack Dempsey and Fred Astaire all owned pit bulls. As do Veronica Mars and Michael J. Fox.

Please, think before you judge. "Ban the deed, not the breed."
