Roundup: Atwater volleyball clinches title share

Atwater clinched at least a share of the Central California Conference championship with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-11 sweep of Merced on Tuesday night at Merced High.

Alli Gurden led the way for Atwater (10-0 CCC, 13-0) with 12 kills and 19 digs. Marissa Guardado orchestrated the offense with 22 assists and Nicole Heller finished with seven blocks.

Rebecca Garitano led Merced (2-9 CCC) with five kills, 16 digs and one ace.

Atwater can clinch the title outright on Thursday at home against Buhach Colony.

VOLLEYBALL

BUHACH COLONY 3, TURLOCK 0

ATWATER -- Megan Callahan kept Buhach Colony's slim CCC title hopes alive with 20 kills.

Buhach Colony defeated Turlock 25-22, 25-15, 25-14.

Buhach Colony trails Atwater by two games in the CCC standings with two games left to play.

Britney Gasper finished with 27 assists and Ali Sherman recorded 16 digs for BC (8-2 CCC).

DOS PALOS 3, AVENAL 1

DOS PALOS -- Gia DeFrancesco's 13 kills and Maisie Galindo's 30 assists helped lead Dos Palos to a 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18 win over Avenal.

Brianna Moore added 12 kills for DP and Jessi Hammerslough led the defense with 14 digs.

Dos Palos improved to 3-2 in the West Sierra League.

WATER POLO

MERCED 9, GOLDEN VALLEY 3

Tessa Hanson helped Merced complete the season sweep over its crosstown rivals with three goals.

Alison Miller and Paige Rasmussen added two goals each for Merced (10-2 CCC). Merced goalie Erika Jones turned away six shots in the cage.

ATWATER 10, BUHACH COLONY 5

ATWATER -- Megan Russell scored three goals and came away with two steals as Atwater cruised to a win over Buhach Colony.

Colleen Takahashi added two goals and two steals for Atwater (4-7 CCC).

Poloma Salazar led Buhach Colony with two goals. Goalie Becca Hammar finished with 11 steals and four saves.

WATER POLO

ATWATER 13, BUHACH COLONY 10

ATWATER -- Chase DelaCruz scored early and often for Atwater with seven goals.

Brother Dylan DelaCruz added three goals as Atwater improved to 3-8 in the CCC.

Sean Donnelly paced Buhach Colony with five goals.

SANTA FE BOWL TICKETS

Tickets for Friday's Santa Fe Bowl between Merced and Atwater will be pre-sold beginning today until Friday at the Student Body Offices at both schools.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Atwater fans and students should park and enter Stadium '76 through the tri-college center parking lost on the visiting side of the stadium.
