OAKLAND -- The Merced College football came close to springing the upset. Oh-so close.
Brendan Crawford connected with sure-handed tight end Kyle McMillin near the Laney 10-yard line in the waning seconds of Friday evening's game, but the ball came loose at the 8.
With it went the Blue Devils' hopes.
Laney fell on top of the football, securing a 25-20 Golden Gate Conference victory.
With the win, Laney, ranked No. 20 in the state, bolstered its bowl hopes and improved to 3-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall.
MC (1-2 GGC), meanwhile, has lost two straight games by a total of seven points.
This one was disappointing. Trailing 14-7 at the half, the Blue Devils jumped into the lead with 13 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Emmanuel Brooks scored both touchdowns on runs of 3 and 9 yards.
Brooks finished with 93 yards on 23 carries.
Laney closed with a bang, finding the end zone twice in the fourth quarter on short runs by Dominique Ferrell.
The defense, however, deserves the credit, jarring the ball loose from McMillin in the final seconds.
Sophomore cornerback Jamichael Turner scored MC's first touchdown on a 42-yard interception return.
