Cabrillo sinks Merced College football

APTOS -- Merced College just dug too big of a hole to overcome on Saturday.

The Blue Devils spotted Cabrillo College a 29-7 lead before staging a furious comeback.

MC's Brendan Crawford tossed three touchdowns, but a failed 2-point conversion and a late interception deep in Cabrillo territory allowed the Seahawks to escape with a 29-27 Coast Conference victory.

A slow start for the MC offense gave Cabrillo some tremendous field position early, and the Seahawks took advantage.

The Blue Devils (1-1 CC, 3-4) went three-and-out in their first four possessions.

Cabrillo (1-1, 3-4) answered with a field goal, a Gino Delucci touchdown pass and an Anthony Bendana 69-yard punt return for a score to build a 17-0 lead.

Emmanuel Brooks got MC on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run, but it didn't halt Cabrillo's momentum.

A 1-yard punt by Fabian Miramontes put Cabrillo right back in business at the MC 38-yard line.

Delucci hit Ryan Saucedo with a 38-yard touchdown pass on the very next play. Byron Newman tacked on an 84-yard TD run to make it 29-7.

The Blue Devil defense finally started turning things around with just over 2 minutes to go in the half.

Jericho Leota sacked Delucci and forced a fumble, which Joe Ramirez recovered and rumbled to the Cabrillo 24.

Crawford found an open Kyle McMillin on the next play to cut the lead to 29-14 at the half.

The second half belonged to the Merced College defense.

The Blue Devils forced three of their four turnovers in the final 30 minutes and only allowed Cabrillo 44 total yards.

Crawford pulled MC within 29-21 with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Beavers early in the fourth quarter and found Andy Benavides with a 27-yard TD toss on the very next series.

MC's attempt to tie the game with a 2-point conversion failed when Crawford's pass was broken up.

Leota gave the Blue Devils one last shot with his second sack and third forced fumble of the evening.

MC took over at the Cabrillo 33-yard line but could only move the ball four yards. A delay of game penalty on fourth down took the Blue Devils out of field goal range and Crawford's fourth-and-11 heave was intercepted to seal the game.
