Merced College roundup: Fun afternoon for women's water polo

Knowing that the last-place Laney College women's water polo team wasn't going to present much of a challenge on Wednesday afternoon, Bill Halpin told his squad to go out and have a little fun.

The Lady Devils happily obliged.

MC used five different goalkeepers, had eight different goal scorers and got every member of the team into the match as it closed out its stellar regular season with a 17-1 victory over Laney.

"I told the girls to go out and have fun, because starting (today), we'll be all business," Halpin said. "We've got the Coast Conference tournament next week and we'll need to be ready to go."

Jayme Westbrook took advantage of some extended playing time, leading the Lady Devils with three goals and an assist.

Alexas Deatherage, Brooke Dutcher, Brittany Wilson, Sara McIntosh, Kailey Carter, and goalkeeper Kelly Yoder all added two goals as MC finished the season 6-1 in the CC and 21-4 overall.

"The kids have really had a tremendous feeling," Halpin said. "If you'd have told me this team would be going to NorCals before the season started, I'd have laughed.

"Now we have a chance to be ranked as high as No. 4."

First the Lady Devils will have to win next week's Coast Conference Tournament.
