Dec. 15 in Merced history: St. Anthony's will have first mass

December 15, 1958: Father William O'Shea has announced that the first services to be held at the new $79,000 St. Anthony's Catholic Church, will be a solemn high mass Thursday at 7:30 p.m., the Feast Day of Our Lady.

Workmen this week were putting the finishing touches on the impressive red pumice brick structure. Pews from Oakland were assembled, the hardwood seats will accommodate 600 parishioners. Stained glass windows fashioned in Ireland, Father O'Shea's homeland will lend peaceful light to the church's interior.

GUSTINE STUDENTS IMPROVE TEST SCORES

Students in the Gustine Unified School District scored at or above expected levels last year in the California Assessment Program tests given to third-, sixth- and 12th-graders statewide. Overall Gustine improved in all categories except two in comparison to last year's scores . Third-graders scored best improving their scores by 65 points over last year in reading, written expression and math.

WELL TRAVELED WARDEN LANDS CASTLE JPA JOB

Interim director of the Castle Joint Powers Authority should be a relatively easy title for Warren L. Warden to accept.

Warden will be retained as interim director until the permanent governance of the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center is determined. The City of Atwater is seeking full annexation of the former Air Force while Merced COunty wishes joint governance fo the actual airport parcel.

Warden was referred to the JPA board by Public Service Skills, a professional registry that specializes in interim manamement personnel.
