Around Town: Pet adoptions

PetSmart will host a Second Chance for Love Adoption Weekend through Sunday.

Adopt a pet and receive a $7 coupon toward a bag of dog or cat food, plus with every adoption, a $5 donation will be made to PetSmart Charities.

Last Hope Cat Kingdom will hold an adoption fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Saturday. There will be raffles, refreshments and giveaways. On Saturday there will also be face paintings and pictures with mascots. The adoption fair is also on Sunday.

Heart fund breakfast

The Willow Lodge #121 and Novara Rebekah Lodge #61 will host its annual breakfast for the American Heart Association from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Oddfellows Hall. For a donation to the American Heart Association, participants will be served pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice.

Free soup supper

St. Paul Lutheran Church will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at 2915 N. McKee Road. A soup supper is offered free of charge before to the service at 6 p.m.

A special Lenten series will be held at 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays beginning March 4 through April 1.

Solar power eyed

A solar seminar will be held in Merced at the Merced Golf and Country Club, 6333 N. Golf Road, at 7 p.m. Feb. 27. The presentation will look at the new 30 percent tax credit, the inevitability of electric rate increases for 2009 and new financing options. For more information, call (209) 847-2977.

Pro-life oratory

United For Life of Merced will sponsor a pro-life oratory contest at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Merced Civic Center, 18th and N streets. The contest is open to all freshmen to senior high students, including private or home schooled students throughout Merced County.

First-place winner receives $200; second, $150; third, $100. All other entrants will be awarded $25 for participating. For more information, call (209) 383-5222. Final signup date is Feb. 23.

Soroptimist International of Merced is seeking requests for donations to area service organizations for the 2009-2010 year.
