Around Town: Walnut Institute to be held

MODESTO -- The 39th annual Tri-County Walnut Institute will be held March 17 at the Stanislaus County Ag Center, 3800 Cornucopia Way in Modesto.

The event will run from 8 a.m. until noon, with registration and refreshments beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Included in the event will be discussions on codling moth mating disruption, new developments in walnut husk fly managment, the California Walnut Marketing Board Annual Report and drought management strategies.

Fish fry at Buhach

ATWATER -- S.E.S. Junior District #6 of Merced will host its annual fish fry Friday at the Buhach Pentecost Hall, 2889 Buhach Road.

Takeouts will be available from 3:30 to 6 p.m. with dinners served starting at 5 p.m. Cost is $30 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. On the menu are deep-fried Alaskan cod, red potatoes, sweet potatoes, sauteed onions and peppers, corn, salad, bread and dessert. wine and soft drinks included.

Corned beef dinner

Atwater Baptist Church will host its annual corned beef dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, 2124 First St.

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Dinner includes corned beef, cabbage, new potatoes, carrots, hot roll, coffee, lemonade and orange sherbet. Tickets must be purchased or reservations made by March 4.

LE GRAND

Deep pit beef

The 62nd annual deep pit barbecue beef dinner hosted by Le Grand United Methodist Church will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Le Grand Elementary School all-purpose room, 13071 Le Grand Road.

Cost is $12.50 for adults, $6 for children 6-12 and free for children under 5. A drawing and silent auction will be held with donated items from local merchants.

Atwater/Merced Little League will host its annual all-you-can-eat crab feed at 6 p.m. Saturday at the APC Hall, 1420 Third St.

The Greater Merced Chamber of Commerce will host the 2009 Springtime Reunion Car Show on May 9 at Castle Air Museum, Buhach Road and Santa Fe Drive.
