Father Jim Nibet returns to St. Joseph's Catholic church in Mariposa to present a Lenten Renewal Mission from March 17 to 19 at St. Joseph's, 4985 Bullion St.

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and there will be different talks each day.

Filoli bus trip

The Le Grand Garden Club will sponsor a bus trip to Filoli Gardens departing from Brights Nursery at 6:45 a.m. Thursday

Cost is $50 and includes a tour of Filoil's house and garden, a stop at Sunset Magazine's garden and if time permits Summer Winds Nursery. Sign up before the trip. You will need to bring a sack lunch.

TURLOCK

Adopt horses, burros

Residents of the San Joaquin Valley and surrounding area will have the opportunity to adopt a horse or burro from the BLM at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds on March 21 and 22.

They will arrive at 2 p.m. March 20 for a preview. This will run in conjunction with the Back County Horsemen's Rendezvous. There will be 40 horses and 10 burros, mostly yearlings, and any that are not taken during the bidding, will be available for a $125 adoption fee.

More than 220,000 animals have been placed in private care since the BLM's adopt-a-horse or burro program began in the early 1970s.

Storytelling evening

Friends of the Library will host its third Storytelling Evening at 7 p.m. March 17 at 2100 O St. on the main floor. Light refreshments will follow. Then there will be a spring cleaning book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 28.

Beef weigh in

Merced County Fair beef exhibitors are required to bring their animals to Turlock Livestock Yard, 10430 N. Lander, from 1 to 4 p.m. March 25 to be weighed in order to be able to participate in the 2009 fair.

Scholarships

It's time to review the many scholarships available locally for the 2009 - 2010 academic year.

At least 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 are processed annually through the Merced college Financial Aid office in cooperation with the Merced College Foundation.

The scholarships are funded by many organizations, businesses and individuals.

Eligibility criteria and applications are available at the Merced College financial aid office and must be turned into the scholarship monitor not later than March 31.
