Around Town: BMX nights

ATWATER -- The Police Activities League will start up again with BMX nights at Veterans Park from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month through October. The first is Monday.

Bikes and helmets will be provided and long-sleeve shirts and pants are required.

Boys and girls age 7 to 14 are invited to participate and must provide their birth certificates. Registration forms are available at the Atwater PAL office between 3 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Merced College and Rep. Dennis Cardoza will host a College and Career Youth Fest from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Merced College Stadium to help prepare local middle school students for college.

Musical celebration

Come and join a "Testament of Praise: A Celebration of Faith" at 4 p.m. May 17 at the Merced United Methodist Church.

Run for Ryne

Yosemite Church will host a 5k/10k walk/run for Ryne Spitzer, a 19-year-old Golden Valley High School graduate who was injured in a car accident.

Registration is $25 and includes a raffle ticket and a Run for Ryne wristband. All proceeds will go toward Ryne's medical expenses.

The Merced Breakfast Lions Club maintains a series of dropoff locations for old, unused, prescription eyeglasses or hearing aids.

Help the club turn the dream of vision and sound into a clear reality.

Dropoff sites are at the offices of doctors David Baba and Paul Smith; Save Mart at Olive Avenue and G Street; or the optical departments at Costco and Wal-Mart.
