Around Town: Alumni picnic

Mariposa High's annual alumni picnic will be held from 10 a.m. to evening on June 20 at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds, Fiske picnic area.

All alumni, graduates or not, relatives, guests, teachers and staff are welcome. Bring your own lunch and beverage for a day full of visiting.

The class of 1959 will meet to celebrate its 50th reunion. Raffle tickets will be available at the picnic.

Book sale Friends of the Library will host a book sale from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Gracey Room at the main branch. Buy one, get one free.

Free coupons Free farmers markets coupon booklets for low-income senior citizens are now available.

Booklets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Senior citizens can purchase produce, herbs and honey at any of the California Department of Aging-approved certified farmers markets in Merced, Los Banos and Dos Palos.

The booklets are worth $20 each.

AARP meeting

The Merced AARP chapter will host a meeting at 9:45 a.m. today at the Merced Senior Center, 755 W. 15th St.

Each of four students receiving a scholarship will be introduced and give a short talk on their future plans. The scholarships are given in four areas, education, engineering, agriculture and medicine.

Car show

Atwater Baptist Church and New Life Community Church will host its second annual Spring Fling Car Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 2124 First St.

The public is invited to show their favorite car, truck or motorcycle, and trophies will be awarded

No registration fee and there will be free food and activities for the kids and entertainment for the whole family.

The Central Valley Mustang Riders is a new car club and they will be taking a cruise to Mariposa on June 20.

They will meet in the Circuit City parking lot at noon and leave at 1 p.m.

JAMESTOWN

Sierra Hope Ride

The 15th annual Sierra Hope Ride/Jamestown 2009 includes a parade from Mitchell's Modesto Harley-Davidson to Main Street in Jamestown.

Some 1,500-plus motorcycle riders will make the 50-mile ride to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year's ride raised more than $215,000.

Gateway Community Church is offering summer camp for children beginning June 8 through July 31, Monday through Friday, at $50 per week per child.
