Winton melee leaves man in critical condition

A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after a fight erupted near Winton early Sunday.

No one is in custody and Merced County sheriff's investigators say details about the fight are sketchy.

Deputies responded to the scene shortly after midnight after receiving a call about a large party or gathering near Shaffer Road and Oakdale Road, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.

The victim was discovered unconscious, bleeding from his head. He was flown to a Modesto hospital with head and back trauma, MacKenzie said.

Although the circumstances leading to the fight are unknown, the caller told dispatchers that at least 30 people, armed with weapons, were involved in the fight. MacKenzie said it's unknown what type of weapon was used to injure the victim.

Sheriff's investigators are asking anyone with information about the crime to call (209) 385-7472 or (209) 385-7444.

Callers can remain anonymous.

Reporter Victor A. Patton can be reached at (209) 385-2431 or vpatton@mercedsun-star.com.
