Lots of talent set to play in Golden Valley's Volleyball Classic

Area volleyball fans won't have to travel far to see some good matches in the next two days.

Golden Valley's Central California Classic gets under way today.

The first round of the 36-team tournament will be held in nine different gyms throughout the area today.

Golden Valley, Merced, Atwater, Buhach Colony, Chowchilla and Hilmar are all sites for pool play.

Action is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. at each site.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the upper division to be held at Golden Valley, Merced and Merced College.

Saturday's matches will start at 8:30 a.m. with the championship scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at Golden Valley.

"The team everyone wants to see is Bishop Manogue," said GV coach Matt Thissen. "They have twin sisters, who are going to Nevada on scholarship.

"They play a fast, quick game. They are fun to watch and not so fun to coach against."
