In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Yosemite National Park will offer free admission on Saturday.
In addition to waiving entrance fees, there will be special screenings of the new Ken Burns' documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." The screenings will be shown every night for six nights beginning Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The documentary will also be shown on PBS stations.
Yosemite is also hosting its sixth annual "Yosemite Facelift" through Sunday. This annual event is designed to help clean up the park after the summer season. Thousands of volunteers donate their time picking up litter around the park.
KPTV-Valley Public Television said it will show Burns' documentary beginning Sunday.
The series begins its six-night run with airings of the first episode at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
Episode one, "The Scripture of Nature," features Yosemite Valley and the geyser wonderland of Yellowstone, documenting the birth of the idea of creating national parks for the enjoyment of everyone.
From Sunday through Oct. 2, KVPT said it will debut a new episode of the film each night at 8 p.m., with episodes immediately repeating on the same night they premiere.
KVPT said it will stage documentary marathons on the weekend after the film's debut. On Oct. 3, the series' first three episodes will air from 1:30 to 8 p.m. On Oct. 4, the final three episodes will air from 2 to 8 p.m.
More information on the series is available on the KVPT Web site at kvpt.org/nationalparks. The site includes lesson plans for educators.
