19-year-old woman sustains serious injuries in car crash

LE GRAND -- A 19-year-old Chowchilla woman was hospitalized with major injuries Thursday after her car crashed near Le Grand.

No one else was involved or hurt in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened after the driver, Stephanie Smith, was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier southbound on Cunningham Road at a high rate of speed, according to Officer Shane Ferriera, CHP spokesman.

For unknown reasons, Smith drifted onto the southbound shoulder of the road, losing control of the car as she approached the Le Grand canal bridge. The car traveled off the north bank of the canal, becoming airborne, Ferriera said.

The front of the car hit the south canal bank and overturned, coming to a rest on its wheels.

Smith was flown to a Modesto hospital.

Ferriera said drugs or alcohol weren't factors in the accident.
