Defendant admits to killing man

LEMOORE: A Lemoore man will avoid the death penalty after admitting he killed a man and leading authorities to the body buried behind a high school.

Ricky McConnaughy pleaded guilty Oct. 8 to second-degree murder as part of a deal with Kings County prosecutors. Under terms of the deal, sheriff's officials wouldn't announce the developments until after the birthday of McConnaughy's young daughter last week.

Sheriff Chris Jordan says the victim, 65-year-old Robert Lee Adams, had hired McConnaughy to do small jobs around his home.

Authorities believe Adams killed the man by striking him with his fist in a robbery.

McConnaughy was arrested in August when police found him driving Adams' missing pickup truck, with the victim's cell phone and a credit card.

He faces 15 years to life in prison.
