Schofield tops 300 yards in 27-14 win over Yosemite

DOS PALOS -- Kevin Schofield is the definition of a workhorse.

The Dos Palos junior running back carried the ball 51 times for 331 yards on Friday, 13 yards shy of the school record set by Kenny James in 2000.

However, the night didn't entirely belong to Schofield.

The Dos Palos defense came up with four interceptions and the offense pieced together a long fourth-quarter drive when it counted, resulting in a 27-14 victory at Bill Hume Stadium.

"Just a good, physical game," Dos Palos head coach Mike Sparks said. "We're a different team when we control the ball on offense, and the defense made some big plays."

Andrew Vargas intercepted two Yosemite passes.

David Quiroz and Kevin Cozzi had the other two interceptions.

Quiroz also hauled in the game's first touchdown on a 30-yard screen pass from quarterback Ryan Yriarte.

Hector Vargas, who scored nine of Dos Palos' 27 points, nailed his first of two 30-plus yard field goals to make it a 10-0 game.

Ernesto Guzman recovered a fumble for the Dos Palos defense, which turned into a 29-yard touchdown run from Schofield to make it 17-0.

"(Schofield) is a warrior on both sides of the ball," Sparks said.

Quiroz added his second touchdown on a two-yard run to make it 24-0.

"Quiroz, Vargas, Cozzi and the offensive line came up big," Sparks added.

Dos Palos went up 27-0 before Yosemite (1-5 North Sequoia League, 3-6) started its comeback.

Yosemite scored two touchdowns before Dos Palos (3-1 NSL, 4-4) pieced together its game-clinching drive that ate up the last 8 minutes of the game.

Quiroz (15 carries, 76 yards) picked up a critical first down on a third and long to keep the chains -- and the clock -- moving.
