Football: Golden Valley gets an 'A' for effort against Pitman

Offense can't keep pace with Pitman

TURLOCK -- Tyler Arnsberg sprinted to the sideline, clinching his teeth in anger.

Overwhelmed with frustration, he fell to his knees and clutched two hand fulls of dirt and let out a scream.

The Golden Valley quarterback had just thrown his second interception in a game that was quickly getting out of hand.

On the very next play, Pitman broke free for its 10th touchdown -- and the game was still in the third quarter.

Like his team had done all game long, the sophomore quarterback strapped on his helmet and kept fighting. And in the end, Golden Valley put up its third highest point total of the season in a 76-45 loss.

"It was a very difficult game," Arnsberg said. "We stuck up 45 points, but it's pretty tough to win when they score 76. They are a good offensive team, but I think we scared them in the first half."

After a 14-0 start by Pitman, the two teams traded a flurry of blows that resulted in 34 points in less than five minutes.

Arnsberg started the action with a 1-yard plunge to pull GV to within a score with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Pitman's Dominic Walker returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, only to be one-upped by Golden Valley's Robert Askew, who returned one for 89 yards on the very next play.

Pitman then pulled away with a Walker touchdown catch and a Markus Sanders touchdown run following an Arnsberg interception.

"For them to score 70 ... that was because they had to," said Golden Valley coach Jon Betschart. "I'm proud of our effort tonight."

Matt Delora rushed for 159 yards and had a pair of touchdowns for GV.
