The UC Davis Medical Center recently sent a $29,000 hospital bill to the parents of a murdered Sacramento State student, drawing attention to how much hospitals charge patients without insurance. This database, drawn from state records, shows the average cost of a hospital stay involving several common diagnoses for nearly every hospital in California. The prices shown are unadjusted -- insurance companies or government programs often negotiate with hospitals for lower prices -- so they resemble the bill a hospital would send to a patient without insurance.
Important: Kaiser hospitals do not report price data to the state.
