Dos Palos runs over rival Chowchilla

DOS PALOS -- Kevin Schofield and David Quiroz presented quite a 1-2 punch for Dos Palos on Friday.

The two Dos Palos running backs picked up critical yardage and key first downs in the second half, helping lift Dos Palos to a 23-6 win over rival Chowchilla.

Dos Palos scored the game's final 23 points.

"It's a big win," Dos Palos coach Mike Sparks said. "It gives us outright second place in the (North Sequoia League), and 4-2 was a good way to bounce back from 0-6 (last year)."

After Dos Palos and Chowchilla went into the locker rooms tied at 6-6, DP (5-5) took over after the break.

Dos Palos opened the third quarter with a heavy dose of Schofield (22 carries, 141 yards), and capped its first drive with a Hector Vargas 30-yard field goal to make it 9-6. Schofield had gains of 16 and 20 yards to put Dos Palos in field-goal range.

Chowchilla fumbled its next possession. That's when DP went to Quiroz, who picked up 43 of his 88 rushing yards on the drive. Quiroz punched it in from 1 yard out.

Chowchilla had four second-half possessions -- and Dos Palos forced as many turnovers.

Quiroz picked up 22 yards for a clutch first down on Dos Palos' final scoring drive. Schofield took a toss to the left for a TD from 17 yards out to make up the game's final score.

Carlos Flores scored Chowchilla's only TD in the first quarter for a momentary 6-0 lead.

"(DP) came out hard in the second half and ran the ball," Chowchilla coach John Henson said. "We didn't struggle offensively, we established a solid run game. Our offensive turnovers really shot any momentum we had going."

DP's scoring flurry began when quarterback Ryan Yriarte hooked up with JV callup Jerry Warren for a 27-yard strike with 4 minutes left in the first half.

Chowchilla's season is finished after going 4-6 overall, 2-4 in the NSL.

DP will find out who and where it plays in the postseason later on today.
