A 28-year-old man is in critical condition after being beaten early Sunday morning at a bar in Winton, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
The incident came to investigators' attention after witnesses flagged down Deputy Sam Becerra around midnight, informing him of a fight at the Outpost Bar, located in the 6500 block of Winton Way.
The deputy arrived and found the victim lying on the ground, as several people took off running, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
Sheriff's investigators aren't releasing the victim's name.
Investigators believe up to three suspects approached the victim, asking him if he belonged to a gang. When the victim denied belonging to a gang, one of the suspects punched the victim, knocking him out, MacKenzie said.
After chasing the suspects on foot, the deputy caught up with 22-year-old Ubaldo Rosas of Winton and arrested him.
MacKenzie said it's unknown whether Rosas is the man who punched the victim.
The victim, who had severe head trauma and was bleeding from the ears, regained consciousness after the beating. He was flown by helicopter to a Modesto hospital and is in critical condition, MacKenzie said.
No details about the other suspects were available, MacKenzie said.
Rosas was booked into Merced County Jail of suspicion of participating in a criminal street gang. He was released from jail Sunday, after posting $50,000 bail.
