New courthouse in works for Los Banos

The State Public Works Board said it gave formal approval for plans for a new $32.6 million courthouse in Los Banos, with funding authorization from the agency.

The approval marks the official start of the courthouse construction project, which will be managed by the state Administrative Office of the Courts.

The Los Banos Courthouse, built in 1980, is overcrowded, functionally deficient and significantly lacking in security features to current standards, the agency said in a news release.

The proposed project would replace this shared-use building with a modern, secure, and functionally appropriate courthouse with two courtrooms in 29,511 square feet.

Plans would also improve court services in western Merced County by providing a jury assembly room and adding a family law division and family law proceedings.

Included would be mediation and self-help services and one additional courtroom to accommodate a planned new judgeship.

The proposed project, with an estimated total cost of $32.6 million, is funded by Senate Bill 1407. It was ranked as an "immediate need" by the Judicial Council, making it among the highest priority capital-outlay projects for the judicial branch of California.
