The Stockton Record: Please, let's not go Dutch

The Dutch government is about to bill its citizens for every mile they drive and do that by tracking vehicle movements with a GPS monitoring system.

Eliminated will be a purchase tax -- a move that will cut the new-car price by about 25 percent -- and a road tax that costs about $900 a year for a midsize car.

But in its place the government will collect about 7 cents a mile for each mile driven, with higher charges during rush hour or for driving on congested roads.

Such a tax has been discussed for the United States, although it's hard to see how someone living in the wide open spaces of Montana would be enamored of the idea.

The Dutch can experiment with their road tax; we'll keep our gas tax.
