Time to apply for Kops, Firefighter toys

The city of Merced said applications for the Kops and Firefighters for Kids Toy Drive are available for needy families in Merced.

Organizers expect about 50 families to be selected by lottery for the program. Applications are available at the Main Fire Station at 99 E. 16th St and at the Central Police Station at 611 W. 22nd St.

When picking up an application, people must show an ID, proof that they are residents of the city and provide a contact phone number. Families selected for the program will be notified by phone between Dec. 7 and 13.

Toys for the program go to children ranging from toddlers to 12. There are 25 toy barrels located in businesses around town where toys can be dropped off. People interested in making a tax-deductible donation can contact the program organizer, Sgt. Bob Chapman at (209) 385-8848.
