Letter: Protect museum

Editor: What is Merced County's No. 1 tourist attraction?

As a representative of the Castle Air Museum Foundation, I want to voice my concerns regarding proposals on siting the high-speed rail maintenance yard.

One proposal would swallow up the majority of the air base for the maintenance facility. That proposal would be devastating, as it would in one action jeopardize current business operations, eliminate future economic development fostered by the state's fourth largest runway, which is still a Department of Defense asset, and probable elimination of the Castle Air Museum.

Castle Air Museum has in excess of 50 aircraft on display. Almost all are on loan from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

Any action to move the museum would require ap- proval from these sponsoring agencies. Moving these arti- facts would undoubtedly re- sult in huge expense, exten- sive time (probably years), and likely result in the loss of irreplaceable artifacts. The process of relocating the museum would be its demise.

As CEO of the Castle Air Museum, I ask you to be prudent in swapping current businesses, potential economic growth from a major airport facility and the air museum.
