Nelson will run for new term on Merced County Board of Supervisors

He says there's still more to accomplish despite progress over the past 8 years.

Merced County Supervisor Mike Nelson says he will seek re-election to his post in the June 2010 election.

Nelson has been a member of the Board of Supervisors since 2002, representing residents in District 3, an area that covers Atwater, North Merced, Franklin-Beachwood and McSwain.

Nelson made the announcement through an e-mailed press release.

"During my two terms on the Board of Supervisors, I have sought to improve the quality of life for our residents and have worked hard to be responsive to our community's needs," he said, according to the release. "By all measures, we have accomplished a great deal. By working together, we have made great progress over the past several years, but there is still work that needs to be addressed. That is why I seek re-election."

There are two supervisor seats up for election on June 8. District 5 -- which covers Dos Palos, Los Banos, Dos Palos Y, Midway, Santa Nella, South Dos Palos, and Volta -- is currently represented by Jerry O'Banion and also up for grabs.

Calls to O'Banion about his candidacy were not immediately returned Wednesday.

This June will prove to be an active election season in Merced County: also up for election are the assessor-recorder, auditor-controller, district attorney, sheriff-coroner, county superintendent of schools, five superior court judge positions, and treasurer-tax collector-county clerk.

The first day to pull election papers for each of those positions is Jan. 4.

On Wednesday, Karen Adams confirmed that she also intends to seek re-election as treasurer-tax collector-county clerk.
