Two local 25-year-old men were killed Christmas Eve when the pickup one of them was driving ran a stop sign and collided broadside with a Ford Focus.
California Highway Patrol withheld names of the two victims, pending notification of next-of-kin.
Three others were injured in the collision. Jennie Correia, 25, of Atwater, and Travis Castrano, of Merced, were transported for treatment of minor injuries, the CHP said. Casandra Garcia, 16, riding in the Ford, was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
The collision happened around 9:40 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Dickenson Ferry Road and Gurr Road in Merced.
CHP said a 25-year-old male from Merced was driving a 2005 Ford F-350 pickp eastound on Dickenson Ferry, approaching Gurr, at an unknown speed.
At the same time, a 25-year-old male from Atwater was driving the 2001 Focus southbound approaching Dickenson Ferry, also at at unknown speed.
“For an unknown reason,” CHP reported, the driver of the Ford pickup ran the stop sign at the intersection. The truck collided broadside with the car, and both vehicles overturned several times.
As a result, both drivers suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP is investigating the collison.
