A 24-year-old Livingston man was killed in a one-car accident early New Year's morning on Highway 99 near the G Street exit.
Authorities withheld his name pending notification of next-of-kin.
His 1994 Honda was traveling south on Highway 99 in the left lane at an unknown rate of speed around 5:35 a.m., according to a California Highway Patrol report.
"For unknown reasons," the report said, the car drifted into the right southbound lane and onto the right shoulder. The front of the Honda struck the guardrail and the G Street bridge railing, causing major front-end damage to the vehicle, the report said.
After it struck the bridge railing, the Honda traveled back into the left southbound lane and stopped.
The driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and suffered major injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center Merced where he was later pronounced dead.
The CHP said it was unknown whether DUI was involved in the crash. It said the collision remains under investigation. Weather was cloudy at the time of the fatality.
Caltrans crews spent several hours Friday cleaning debris from the highway and repairing the guardrail. Part of the highway and at least one ramp were closed until the work was finished.
