Greg Smith stood on the court smiling, basking in the standing ovation he and his team were receiving.
Fresno State, without their leader in points, rebounds and steals, conquered Western Athletic Conference foe Nevada 87-77 on Saturday night in front of 8,494 fans inside the Save Mart Center.
Smith, a freshman center, led the Bulldogs with 25 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. But he wasn't alone in his effort.
Several Bulldogs played their best games, or close to it, with star forward Paul George out with a severely sprained ankle.
One of them was sophomore Brandon Sperling, who filled in for George at the small-forward position.
Sperling finished with 10 points, seven assists, eight rebounds and zero turnovers. Coach Steve Cleveland called him the difference-maker and said it was the best game Sperling had played in a Fresno State jersey.
