Debbie Croft: Ski race, young artists and chamber honors

Cross-county skiers take note:

The annual Nordic Holiday Race at Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park is scheduled for Feb. 20-21. This event includes the 18K classic race, the downhill telemark and a 38K freestyle race to Glacier Point and back. It will be serious fun for the competitive, and just a great chance to meet other cross-country skiers for everyone else.

Registration is $30 until Feb. 9, and $40 afterward; it includes a half-day lift ticket and an evening awards party. The best costume in the classic race wins a prize. For more information, call (801) 559-4884 or visit: www.yosemitepark.com.

Students' artwork entered into the Young Masters Art Competition will be on display at the Mariposa County Arts Council Gallery from Feb. 1-26. The gallery is located at 5009 5th Street in downtown Mariposa, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For details, call Donna Brownell at (209) 966-3155 or (800) 903-9936, or e-mail her at info@arts-mariposa.org.

If you have a fairly decent singing voice, it's not too late to join the Mariposa Community Chorus. This lively group meets on Monday nights during the school year at the Mariposa County High School Fiester Auditorium, from 6:30 p.m. until about 9 p.m. They perform two concerts a year, usually combining their efforts with the high school and junior high school choirs. Director Rod Fiester always chooses an interesting mix of classics songs, show tunes, big band sounds, sacred music and melodies from cultures around the world. The MCC is open to ages from teen to everything above. For more information, call the Mariposa County Visitors Center at (209) 966-7081.

And lastly, congratulations are in order for some outstanding folks in Mariposa. Every year the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce sends ballots to the business community for their nominees of the following: Business, Businessman and Businesswoman of the Year.

The Business of the Year award was chosen from the 2009 businesses of the month, and those were: Mariposa Brewing Company, SierraSunTimes/Goldrushcam, River Rock Inn, Mariposa Contractors Association, Mariposa Shipping Company, Yosemite Glass and Window, Inc., Ponderosa Auto Dismantling & Towing, Barn & Garage King, Mariposa County Fairgrounds, Pioneer Market and Foster True Value Hardware. The Mariposa County Fairgrounds won the 2009 Business of the Year award. CEO and Manager Brian Bullis and his staff are to be congratulated for their fine efforts.

Businesswomen nominees were Tracy Dubberke, Dell Knell, Courtney Twiss, Helen Kwalwasser, Sabrina Lyons, Trish Nady, LeeAnn Granville and Pearl Williams. The 2009 Businesswoman of the Year award went to Williams.

The Businessman of the Year award for 2009 actually went to two men: Trent and Gary Williams. This is the first time two brothers were elected as a pair and then won the majority of votes. Other nominees included Bill Verley, Bob Kirchner, Jim Nady and Jeffery Hentz.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Donald W. Haag, who was past Businessman of the Year for 1995 and 2006.

The public is invited to the Chamber Installation Dinner where the awards will be presented. Hosted by Chamber President Lester Bridges, the event will be held at the Best Western Banquet Room, 4999 Highway 140 in Mariposa, on Friday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. for the social hour, with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, Kevin Cann will be key note speaker. Please RSVP through the Chamber office at (209) 966-2456 or online at www.mariposachamber.org.
