State of the Union, state of the valley

More than half of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address this week was dedicated to issues of the nation’s pocketbook.

He acknowledged the anger, disappointment and cynicism over the economic uncertainty raining down on so many Americans.

While the nation may be facing a tough time economically, it could be said that the Central Valley is in dire straits. Sky-rocketing foreclosures and super-high unemployment mean the economic distress here could be far from over.

This week, Off the 99 contacted two local politicians that have been increasingly vocal about two key issues: housing and high-speed rail.

Last week, Dennis Cardoza threw some choice words at the Obama administration and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. We caught him by phone in Washington DC to learn more.

We also called State Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, who heard less gloom and doom in the president’s address. His announcement that $2.25 billion of high-speed rail funding was headed to California was "the best day of her life."
