Officials ponder future of Curry cabins at Yosemite

For the past year-and-a-half, 233 cabins in Yosemite National Park have been off-limits to visitors because of rockfall dangers.

Now National Park Service officials are trying to figure out what to do with the historic buildings of Curry Village before they succumb to the elements, vandals and nesting animals.

The cabins have been frozen in time behind a chain-link fence since October 2008. That's when the equivalent of 570 dump trucks of granite fell on 17 cabins where youngsters on a field trip had been staying.

Park officials are asking the public for suggestions as they begin an environmental assessment. That could lead to some buildings being moved next year and other being demolished.

The superintendent is accepting public comment through April 7.
