Former Merced College football coach Tony Lewis wasn't sure how Odell Collins would do as a running back or fullback at the junior college level.
At the very least, though, Lewis had Collins penciled in as the team's punter.
Lewis said Collins looked good as a runner on his high school game film, but he stood out as a punter.
The speculation turned out to be moot as Collins did just fine at tailback.
After accumulating two of the best statistical seasons in community college history in 1993 and '94, Collins will become the fourth Blue Devil inducted into the CCCFCA Hall of Fame on Saturday.
The bruising 6-foot-3, 245-pound back set school and national records with 3,560 career rushing yards on 551 carries.
He also holds MC's career mark with 35 touchdowns.
"(Collins) was as good as we've ever had," Lewis said. "He actually outgained O.J. Simpson's record, but they didn't give it to him because he broke it in a bowl game.
"The bowl wasn't his 11th game, though. He'd actually missed three games because of injury.
"That's how dominant he was."
