16-year-old boy injured in hit-and-run crash

Merced police are on the lookout after a hit-and-run collision involving a pickup truck and a 16-year-old boy riding a skateboard Sunday night.

The crash was reported shortly after 9 p.m. near West Olive Avenue and R Street, according to Sgt. Don King.

The boy was traveling on his skateboard northbound in the crosswalk of R Street, near a Chevron gas station, when a gray Toyota or Chevrolet pickup truck struck him. The driver of the truck failed to stop and hasn't been identified, King said.

The victim was flown to a Modesto hospital. He has since been treated and released.

Investigators are seeking the driver of the truck, who may face felony hit-and-run charges if arrested, King said.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Jeffrey Gonzales at (209) 385-7733 or the department's automated tip line at (209) 385-4725.

Calls are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
