An animated argument about Jimmy Carter's UC Merced visit

Posted by Brandon on March 12, 2010

You may have heard that former President Jimmy Carter plans to visit UC Merced in May.

It's created quite the conversation in the story comments on the Sun-Star's article, as well as UC Merced's Facebook page.

Sophomore Oliver Darcy, a conservative and a member of the College Republicans, tried to capture the points for and against Carter in a 3-minute YouTube clip.

The animated video, made using a free Web service called Xtranormal, features a discussion between two students, a liberal and a conservative, about Carter's upcoming visit.

Darcy says it was mostly humor, not political motivations, that prompted him to make the video.

"I made the video out of good humor," he said during a phone call Friday afternoon. "We enjoy a good debate, and if anyone else wants to make a video, we more than welcome them to go ahead. Regardless of whether it's liberal or conservative, I think it's funny that we have animated videos about current events on campus."
