The Martial Arts Club at UC Merced said it's hosting the fifth annual "Asian Fest -- A Celebration of Culture" on Saturday at Scholars Lane on campus.
Asian Fest is a growing tradition at the university and organizers invite the community, as well as students, to embrace the various cultures of Merced, according to a news release. Asian Fest begins at 11 a.m. with outdoor festivities featuring vendors, cultural foods, games and other activities, as well as a blend of both contemporary and traditional cultural performances.
Vendors will be selling such items as Hello Kitty merchandise, designer clothing and fresh produce. Outdoor activities include fun and games, sumo wrestling suits, jousting, Henna tattoos and more.
This year there will be a drawing for a new fifth-generation blue 8gb iPod Nano. Tickets are $1.
Guests are encouraged to bring their friends, families, and an empty stomach as student organizations and local restaurants such as New Asia, T's Asian Bistro and Forte Frozen Yogurt will be selling cultural foods.
Along with traditional dishes, such as lumpia and Korean barbecue, there will also be new additions such as Taiwanese barbecue and Asian fusion fries.
The highlight of the Asian Fest is the Supershow, which will encompass cultural performances from around the world. The show features lion dancers, Korean drummers, Chinese dancer, Japanese taiko drummers, Vietnamese instrumentals, Tahitian dancers, Bhangra, martial arts and more.
The show will feature a special artist from India, Won Joung Jin, who specializes in Kathak dance. She incorporates both traditional and contemporary forms of Kathak dancing.
The Supershow tickets will be available for $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.
