A male bicyclist was hospitalized Saturday after being struck by a car near West 16th and Canal streets, Merced police reported.
The victim, who has not been identified, remains in a Modesto trauma center in critical but stable condition, according to Sgt. Jay Struble.
The collision was reported shortly after 9:10 p.m. after the victim was riding his bike southbound across West 16th Street, east of the intersection. The cyclist was then struck by a 61-year-old man driving a 1999 Corolla eastbound on 16th Street.
Merced police, Riggs Ambulance and Merced Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, and the victim was flown to a Modesto hospital.
The victim was suffering from internal bleeding and a fractured leg when he was taken to the hospital, according to police.
The driver of the car stopped after the collision happened and didn't sustain any injuries from the collision, Struble said.
Police said the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
Police say there were few witnesses to the collision and they're asking anyone was saw it to call Struble at (209) 385-4739 or the department's automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Calls are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
