Yosemite in the 1940s

The Yosemite shown in this 1940s travel film looks familiar, but it certainly isn't the national park we know today.


The tent cabins look like something out of a Civil War film, and the drive-through Wawona Tree at Mariposa Grove was still standing. 

If the footage at the 2 1/2-minute mark is any indication, visitors to the park 70 years ago were allowed -- even encouraged, apparently -- to hand-feed the black bears. "Bears are friendly ... unafraid," the video boasts. The deer, too, are shown being hand-fed by a visitor.
